Your Dream Vacation is Here

ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON MUSEUM

Journey back some 100+ years into the fascinating life of the famous author, Robert Louis Stevenson (R.L.S) as you tour his beautiful plantation home, now museum.
Located in Vailima, Apia, just below the famous authors Mt. Vaea burial site, the museum sits majestically centred on lush green lawns, surrounded by magnificent tropical gardens.
Originally built by RLS, the home had subsequently served as the official home for the head of numerous administrations in Samoa, before being resorted to reflect the glory, and grandeur of past eras and turned into a museum.
The museum contains representations of what is known to be the original furnishings, and its rooms recreated to reflect those in old original photographs.
There are numerous rooms to see throughout this estate, one of the popular rooms being the Library, where most of the books on the shelves today, are the same titles R.L.S listed as his personal reading and reference material. The Library houses over 400 volumes of first and subsequent editions of Stevensons work, including the display of three rare first editions—Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Other rooms to see within the museum include the Great Hall, which measures approximately 60ft in length and 40ft in width, and was the focal point of the social functions of the home and equally served the daily activities of the family

The Tapa or Smoking Room, served as a formal dining and sitting area. Its walls are lined with traditional Samoan Tapa cloth made by the women of Savai’i and like all other rooms, restored with period antiques selected to be as close to the actual items as possible. Enjoy the stunning views from the spacious verandas which enhance the beauty of the exterior of this 100 year old home, then as you come to the end of your tour, have a look through the museums gift shop which is stocked with many souvenir items, including copies of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous novels.
