Introduction
Location: Papua New Guinea ​​​

There are four regions in Papua New Guinea: Momase, Highlands, Southern, and New Guinea Islands. New Ireland is approximately 7,404 km2 of surface. The population is 120,000 people.

History​

The first people arrived about 33,000 years ago on the beautiful island of New Ireland. They came from former Papua New Guinea. The arrival of the Lapita people happened the same year. There are three distinct cultural traditions that come from the people of New Ireland: Kabai, Malagan, and Tumbuan. Besides New Guineans, the Dutch sailors William Schouten and Jacob Le Maire were the first Europeans to arrive on the island in 1616. Philip Carteret and Louis Antoine de Bougainville came to the island on 6th July 1768. In the 19th century, the Whaling ships were often coming to the beautiful island of New Ireland to get wood, water, and provisions. In the 1870s and 1880s, a French nobleman ( Marquis de Rays) attempted to establish a French Colony. Four ill-fated expeditions were sent by him to the island and caused the death of 123 settlers. The name of the island was Neumecklenburg from 1885 to 1914 since it was a part of German New Guinea. After World war 1 the island was given to Australia and they renamed the island New Ireland.

Weather

There are two seasons in New Ireland – the wet and the dry season. There are times when there is a rainy season and sometimes there is a sunny season. The best time for tourists to visit the beautiful island of New Ireland is during the sunny season. The average temperature is pretty much high. The rainy season falls in the first quarter of the year including the last two months of November and December. The warmest month is October and the coolest month is September while March is the wettest month. The best time for the tourists to visit is in October. The month to be avoided is  March because it is always rainy with strong winds which will surely interrupt their stay, and they won’t be able to go out for their daily activities.

Tourism

The tourists who visit the island are mostly from Australia, Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world. They go there for diving, surfing or fishing especially. The island has beautiful beaches where the tourists enjoy all these activities. Apart from that, there is a local tradition Malagan Mask Festivals which is held in June. There is also the special sharks calling rituals also popular with tourists and locals. People from other parts of Papua New Guinea are also interested in the local cultural festivals in which they enjoy. The festival is fun and festive and tourists can see different cultural dances performed. The currency of New Ireland is Papua New Guinea Kina. If tourists are coming from outside the country like Australia and the USA,  they have the advantage of having a lot of money to spend because once they change their money into Papua New Guinea currency it will triple the amount.

Transportation

Air

Air – The airplanes that fly to New Ireland are Air Niugini and Air PNG. In order to reach the island of New Ireland, passengers must catch the plane from Port Moresby (Jackson’s airport) which is the capital city of Papua New Guinea and then fly to New Ireland ( Kavieng airport). All the airplanes are based at Jackson’s airport.

Water

New Ireland is a small island where the common transportation on land are buses and cars. People can also walk to the nearest location since the short distance relations are so beautiful to walk to then to be in a car or a bus. The tourists usually take the bus or cars and trucks. Their tradition is to treat and respect a guest or a tourist as a special guest. The big group of tourists usually get on the buses around the island or they rent small speed boats that take them from one side of the island to the other. 

Ground

The speed boats are much faster and more fun, especially for the tourists. Since it is a small island you can reach any destination in less than an hour unless you want to go out to the other smaller islands for sightseeing. As you travel around the island there are a lot of locals who walk because they do not own cars or they just prefer to walk.  The cost of a rental car would be around K300 to K500 ($100-150). The bus service is cheap when everyone traveling as a group. The boat fare depends on the distance or the number of people traveling.

There are various types of accommodation in New Ireland. They have modern hotel buildings and a traditional style of building. They have a  beautiful traditional style which is built either on the land or on the sea. The size of the rooms are standard room, suite, and bungalow. The traditional style houses are built on the ocean and it is cooler than having the house built with an iron roof.

The food in New Ireland is mostly seafood. There is also a variety of food which everyone enjoys. The seafood is cooked in different ways, it is served grilled, fried, or in some other way depending on the people who place their order.  There is also a good offer of local food, mostly vegetables. Most people go to enjoy seafood.

Itinerary

A Family Itinerary

Day 1: The sightseeing of New Ireland.

Morning: Sightseeing of the island New Ireland.
The guests get on a bus and start their ride to the beautiful island of New Ireland which lasts a few hours. After a sightseeing tour, they stop at the local markets for some fresh fruits and coconut drink. There would be enough time to buy some fresh fruits at the local market and to head back to the camping site for lunch.

Afternoon: Surfing time
In the afternoon, the tourists can go surfing the beautiful ocean of New Ireland. They can learn how to surf or just enjoy the activity if they are familiar with it. 

Day 2 : A Festival day

Morning: The kids and their parents will visit some villages to observe how they prepare their local dishes and how they prepare for their traditional dances and to learn more about their culture. Then, they head back to the campsite for lunch and prepare to go back for the second part of the show.

Afternoon: The main event starts when people from villages start to dance and perform their talents and the big feast begins.

Day 3 : Enjoying outdoors

This is the day when the guests are taken out to visit the waterfall and hiking. Tourists enjoy hiking and astonishing nature around. After the activity, they go back to their campsite and have lunch. Then, they go to the craft market to choose some handmade crafts as their souvenirs.

On the island of New Ireland, there are few recreational activities that tourists like to be part of. These activities are also a memorable experience for which they love to come back. New Ireland is an island where the activities are mostly beach themed. New Ireland has beautiful beaches where people fall in love with. People can go surfing, kayaking, scuba diving, fishing. And in the evenings, they have a great view of the moon above the beach and just feel the cool breeze. They also have cultural festivals when they do traditional dances and make the big feasts. It is always fun to watch the different dances and cultures because of so many cultures. It also and island with a mining business that they can visit.
